thanks for the message. I don't think it will be necessary for me to tinker with my POV login. I have a working h2g2 login now and that's good enough for me. When the ML boards come out I expect I will use my hootoo login for those as well.
nice afternoon here in Leeds, a bit blustery though.

Much the same in Shefield, which perhaps is not surprising . It was quite a battle to get that loggin to work but it struck me as an injustice so went forth to find the answer. I really, really don't like the idea that there is no answer, it's always just a question of finding it - or more often the person who knows! I guess that philosophy should fit in around here and there are some very interesting types about, I like it.
Probably having a mission to sort helped get me out and about away from the safe ML havens and begin to explore.
I want to spice up my home page next, very impressed by Moo's efforts, though it clearly means getting back into html code, which I stopped bothering with when I got an HTML editing package - it makes you lazy!
I see you have really got into the Journal, I admire your frankness in it, not sure I'm that brave with the whole world able to tune in. I see you are off to South Africa are you going to continue posting here once you are settled (hope so) - and will you come back?

I'll do my very best to keep on with mustardland and h2g2 when I'm in SA. I don't plan to come back to the UK any time soon - whether I stay online really depends on whether I can get broadband in my flat. It would be a bit of a fag having to go to the internet café every time I wanted to visit ML or do a journal entry.
Re journal - I am enjoying the relative freedom to say what I like here. I don't feel I've got the Mustardland audience breathing down my neck. I don't write for any particular audience in h2g2, just saying whatever comes into my mind and pleasing myself.
Well, the South African telecoms industry is privatising soon and that will mean hopefully cheaper and more accessible broadband. I really, really hope I will be able to get it in my flat.
cheers

Good for you too! It's one of the things I like about here, the relative lack of rules and a single dominant culture - I've always prefered large cities for the same reason. It's a breath of fresh air, nothing wrong with smaller communities but I like bit of both.
The My Space is great and you can just do what you like with it, likewise the journal and it's not as if it's hard for people to avoid if their not interested, message boards are much less discreet - in the proper sense of that word.
Well I hope you do get online in SA, sounds like quite an adventure and I want to read your journal all about it - hope you don't mind!

True
It just seems impolite not to ask
Another major panic in TB, have suggested a FAQ part up here to help , some people are really upset by change, even when people like Peet and Katy are doing such a good job, still can't be helped.
All the best

I have replied in TB to the effect that I think it's a good idea, LP, though this is rapidly becoming yet another touchy no-go area in Mustardland. Some people seem to have made a big point out of rubbishing the whole move with their every post, and that hasn't been helpful either, it seems to have just added to the general hysteria. Personally I'm looking forward to the change. Not because I want things to change, but because I've reconciled myself to the fact that things ARE going to change and I relish the challenge. I think - as in many things in life - you can decide what attitude you're going to take on things and that deciding you're going to be firmly anti is less than helpful.
Again, you see what I mean about freedom - I would never have dared say that in ML about being able to decide what attitude you can take about things, because of the fear of upsetting some people.
I mean to say, you can disagree with something without becoming "upset" about it! (I would also think that people decide they're going to become upset about things, but that's another hot potato I wouldn't dare raise in ML. What happened to letting things run off like water off a duck's back?)
sorry for the rant but I feel it had to come out!!
all the best

Too true mate, there are some people who will always enjoy making a drama out of a crisis. I feel sorry for those who genuinely struggle with the technology and those who just wander in and find this blind panic happening.
It would be quite easy to set up an account here just for posting FAQ's to, membership or anything other than the ability to click a hyper link not required. But even that seems to fall on stoney ground, oh well let them get on with it, really admire Peet & Katy, some people are less than appreciative - I don't mind if some get a bit annoyed by me saying all this either!
See what you mean it's very therapeutic having a small rant up here!

Well I'm skating on thin ice when I say that people can choose to be offended. because thinking about what I find upsetting, I see that I do not choose to be upset by it - it just upsets me. but I can choose how i react to this. I can choose, as you say, to make a drama out of it, insisting on apologies, retractions, etc. Or I can choose to ignore it, let it wash over me.
But then what about the tone of ML? if people were free to make more upsetting posts, then ML wouldn't be nearly such a nice place to be. Those who insist on apologies and retractions might be contributing to making the place better in the future for everyone.
So it's a difficult one. I expect it all boils down to politics in the end, which would explain why you can't engage in discussions about this matter in ML without people getting uppity.

Interesting points, I'm going to be really boring here and say, wait for it, well it's a matter of balance. I think TB can be very daunting to some new people who I've seen get taken to task and hard, because they've gone against some received wisdom.
I think the rule should be if you criticise the opinion not the person it should be allowed. Trolls are easily dealt with, don't feed them.
However, milk monitors love enforcing the received rules and the grumpy brigade love a mad Troll to deal with (imho). I guess most of the rest of us try and steer a reasonable course around the dramatists. There is more good than bad there and a wealth of knowledge, but it is a bit stiffling at times especially if you are at all sensitive - and lets hope we are!

Just saw your pic in the Lockin looks like it was a good weekend. I fear I don't know enough about the Archers to be able to contribute to one of them. Still it looked fun.
