I've looked at a good few personal spaces on this thing, and yours is one of the most interesting. Mine is getting jazzy at the moment but is as yet devoid of interesting content. (It looks fun, but there's really nothing in it. I *have* joined the campaign to rename Thursday Thing, but that's about all.)

(I haven't yet got the hang of plain-text punctuation. The asterisks indicate italics, do they not? Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Actually, it's more subtle than that, isn't it? Asterisks are used to indicate stress: that is, they perform in plain text one of the functions of italics in formatted text. They do not, however, simply stand in for italics: in places where italics would be used for reasons other than stress (such as example words and titles of books) in formatted text, it is usual to simply omit punctuation in plain text.

An example word is a word used as a word.
Socrates was a Greek philosopher.
Socrates has eight letters.

In the second example sentance, and in this, the word Socrates would, in fully formatted text, be italcized.
