Howdo, just been reading through some older threads in a moment (well, hour or two) of boredom at work and came across a post of yours that recommended
"The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" , by Julian Jaynes
Found it on Amazon, publish date of 2000 if that sounds about right.
Do you still recommend it? Have you encountered anything else in this arena?

Definitely still recommend it. It's amazing. Anything else in this arena...? Hmm... I'm mischievously inclined to recommend "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson. It's sf, but if you read TOOCITBOTBM first then SC, you'll realise what I'm on about.

OK, I'll give it a go then!
p.s. already read Snow Crash (although a while ago). I discovered Mr. Stephenson by accident and recently bought Quicksilver as well. Keep meaning to buy Cryptonomicon as I understand that any pretense to have credentials is null and void if one hasn't read it .
Cheers for the recommendation.

me again, lurking your threads I'm afraid.
You mention in one:
"there's some recent scientific evidence that objective reality really is independent of the observer, in contradiction of some models of quantum mechanics"
Where did you see that? I've had a google but couldn't see anything relevant so far so wonderedif you had a pointer to shortcut my searches?

Oh crikey, can't remember. It really was very recent, last couple of months, might have been the New Scientist... My memory of it, recent as it is, is really very sketchy I'm afraid. I don't even remember if it was a result of an experiment or if it was simply a new theory to explain old data.

Okay, not to worry, I'll try NS, bound to be something in there!
