I'm a little hazy as to what exactly I did as it was a while ago, but I'll have a go at helping 
I seem to remember reconnecting the phone, going to the device manager, then looking for unknown modem in the modems section. I think I right clicked on uninstall, then disconnected the phone.
After a restart hopefully you should be able to reinstall the software and then connect up the phone. You might have to scan for hardware changes in the device manager before it scirries off for the driver.
Let me know how you get on, I'll see if there's something else you could try if it doesn't work.
