anyone to willingly calls themself showpony and promises to be nice if offered sugar lumps, is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

Ah - but you see, the showpony angle comes from other people. It's a nickname which stuck. Therefore, when asked to come up with a nickname for h2g2, it was the obvious choice.
And sugar lumps...? Ponies like sugar lumps.
