I Googled away on Friday and found a book by Cat Bordhi called A Second Treasury of Magical Knitting. She uses an invisible cast on that goes right on to the cable needle without using waste yarn.
Saturday afternoon, I was semi-dozing on the couch when Knitty Gritty came on the TV. This episode's project? The Moebius Scarf! The guest designer? Cat Bordhi!
So not only do I have the instructions, I saw a demonstration of the cast on. Karma! 
Thanks for your help. Now, if only I could find my needles.

Oh, Cat Bodhi - she seems to be SO clever! I haven't been able to justify getting her book, and I am cr@p at following instructions anyway - I knit far too losely for most instructions. But I do drool over it online every now and again!
