Strangely enough, Slovakia was one of the places I had in mind. I've only ever been to Bratislava, which is probably easier than most places for vegetarians. And the habit of "salad with everything" makes meals a bit easier, too. Most central european languages don't seem even to have a word for "vegetarian", so the best bet is to eat in places that are used to eccentric western tourists.
I never asked whether the local beer was vegetarian, and I really, really don't want to know.

There are more vegetarian-type restaurants in the eastern part of the country (I suspect maybe the Hungarian influemce?), but the definition of "vegetarian" is even more loose than "fish is okay." Vegetarian soup is made with chicken stock.
There are lots of things in the food I eat over there that I don't want to know too much about. My visits are far and few between, so I tend to just figure in hunger as part of the price I pay
