haymaking
Posted Jul 2, 2000
Not a great year for hay, but at least the sheep stayed out of the field enough to get a reasonable number of bales off - 85 off a far from flat acre & a half. And we've had enough dry days to get it dry (just). Am I the only person who doesnt live in a flat in a city who posts to the guide? Must be more unusual than I thought...

Hedges
Posted Mar 4, 2000
It's the time of year to fix hedges. Most of mine are OK, but I've got a length of snowberry to heave out sometime & replace with something more useful. Since I've got some hedging plants & a huge pile of well-rotted muck handy, it looks like it's going to be this year. Hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, holly, gooseberry and honeysuckle will replace the Victorian monstrosity with something that will (a) support some wildlife (b) fit in with the rest of the hedges and (c) keep sheep out of the garden. In about 10 years. Wish me luck.
