Hi GS,
That's terrific.
Fireside chats MMmmm... sounds delicious. It's just before dawn here and freezing. I live in England so I'll be sharing winter with you. If you take a visit to my Home Page, in my self-description some of the links don't work, for which I apologise (apologize!) but do try them anyway.
It's going to be good bein' friends. I'm an 'older'/'elder'/'senior' too, but I'm really 21...or 19..or...I forget...
Cheers... ...

Hi,
Just seen a TV programme on Republican vote-rigging. More voting machines in republican areas - average wait in white areas last time was 10 minutes, in black areas (which republicans know are Democrat areas) was 4 HOURS. And new identification law rules out the poor, mostly black, who haven't got a passport or a driver's licence PLUS removing people from voting lists in black areas, esp. in FLORIDA (Jebb Bush) and voter-challenging intimidation. Scary because I'm scared of the twin b's - McC and Palin. Democrats have to win many more votes than republicans to win. I'm staying up to see the debate tonight (2 a.m. our time). All the best, hear from you again soon I hope,
Jab

... ... I will explain more at a later date.. I posted last week on "lighting a candle for....."... It is a cloudy over cast day today, March 5.. .. Life seems so different ... an emptiness there...
a big void in my little world that will never go away and will be part of me forever...
..... My only grandchild known as "Spike" by his club brothers the "OUTSIDERS".....
It was not a motorcycle accident that was the cause of his death...
But he was in a lot of back pain from his last accident in November...
There are pictures here of the pretty little bike he had built and the mangled aftermath after a pickup truck made a turn in front of him..

Dear Ginger,
Thanks for the pictures.
He looks a really nice person. It's altogether a shame and a waste in the real peaceful struggle against the hegemony of the complacent selfish values of your/our society.
If he wasn't like I describe him (didn't know him of course) please substitute the truth for my words Ginger but also remember, if it helps, my bit that he looks nice and was killed - accidentally but on purpose, by society's attitude to who he was.
I wish you the ultimate strength to face each day. Only grandchild must be heavy.
Ex-biker myself, (for 15 years).

Dear Jabs,
You may have a point ... killed by a thousand blows??... But most of us are also and some go on to be a "shark" in the business world.. Portland is a very liberal and progressive town... Jeff was very strong willed and I took care of him a lot as a toddler. A difficult child..for sure..But every one loved him. The last 10 years accident prone..I thought....Two days before my daughter drove a long distance to town to do our taxes..All day Jeff did not feel will enough to go out to dinner with her. The next day he has a doctor procedure and says he is feeling better, but a long drive home,no time for dinner. the next evening she happily answers the phone thinking it is Jeff returning her call BUT gets the bad news. Well, here goes..{When I called a woman to tell her the news.... she has known Jeff since he was 3 when he had now begun going on the fall deer and elk hunting trips with his mom & dad. She said she had heard 3 versions of the accident. I did not ask.].. My son had just spent at least an hour talking with the coroners /examiners office. They said it was an accident, no evidence of foul play.. >> He was alone in his room, we are told...He had been with his girl friend..Penny, a woman at least 10 years older and this is beside the point, but Not Pretty....She has 2 teen age sons..She was going to return in a few hours..(which she did and was then distraught.) Jeff was going to do some bike work. Then when he was not doing that his friends that were there went to his room.. What he had been up to is this suffocation thing young men do for that high..He had Velcro wrist bans on and toggles(?) whatever they are called, for release.. Why he didn't..??.. He was on pain medication. He was having a series of procedures(one the day before) to try to get his intestines straightened out from being twisted in the last bike accident. A broken back with numbness in special places. Did he just pass out or was the high freeing him from pain so that he could not face the return to realty.??.. Did he see that white tunnel, hear beautiful music, see his beloved granddad calling, and it was so warm and inviting that he could not turn back to us??
..... Jabs, can you write a poem to lift our hearts and soothe our soul... No religious mumbo~jumbo ... My daughter is devastated... she lives way out on 10 acres in central Oregon out past Mt. HOOD near Bend & Prinville with a tiny black bunny rabbit. He does cute things..4 thousand feet up..It has a stark beauty..Desert like... snow this morning.. .. Thanks for being such a patient listener this evening.. It does a body good... ..

You've got my support immediately, Ginger, but a poem might take longer I'm afraid. Do you think it would be OK to choose one that's already been written - as the quicker the better in these circs? It's up to you.I do have many to choose from.
That bag thing is so dangerous - never tried it myself - among pop stars like Michael Hulse, we've had an MP - member of parliament, not military police (I'm not joking, I wouldn't at a time like this) lose his life through it. He was thought to be a future Minister too.
Stay strong.

Dear Jabs,
Something already written would be great....
You have a mind so full of so much of that and I do not....I'm always reading the news.. ... I have been busy this eve writing a "In memory of Spike..." in my journal...I moved some of your thoughts over there... Hope there is not a rule against that... If you go over for a visit be sure to click on the 2ed link down as that is a great picture of Spike and the bike he built.... He had a great head of hair.... If you look you will notice a very thick braid down his back.... It will be donated to the children Hospital "up on the hill" we say or "Pill Hill"== OHSU ==== "Oregon Health & Science university" it is VERY big.. They were kept pretty busy putting Jeff back together.. I appreciate your caring concern.. Thank you. ..

Please, just do it in your own good time.... Isn't there a saying that goes something about .. "All things come to him who waits..? ..
I am beginning to have periods of calm and inner peace..This morning, until I stepped out on the deck and greeted the sunny day and blue sky and white fluffy clouds..and then again at 5PM , the evening traffic (I live on a "through street") and on a nice day, a few motorcycles going by.. My ear listens ..out of habit.. is it going to turn into the driveway... I go to the front door .. look sadly out.. The street is different now.. it lays there cold and bare with lack of promise...
.................... ................ .................
I think the reason for so much angst is there was a lot of pain in Jeff.. He had been such a happy boy until the divorce at 7 and his MOM left home... When I would have him for a visit and be taking him home, he would say, "Maybe if I fall down and break my leg, my MOM will come home"... So Sad.. I could see it in his eyes comparing school pictures from year to year..They got narrower and narrower and withdrawn.. .. I could go on and on .. .. ..
