Am I back?
Posted Oct 12, 2014
I followed a link from my bookmarks to a book recommendation here and noticed I was still logged in despite a ~2 year absence. Hopefully, I'll be posting regularly in the future. Realistically, I am in many ways busier than I was when I last droped out of h2g2 (on the bright side I have real job now) and a shortage of time is the main reason I left, such is life.

Of course a queuing discussion made me think of h2g2

So apparently in Thailand people use shoes to hold their place in line. This has of course sparked massive internet debate about the best way to queue.

And Another Thing.

I just got around to reading it. It felt faithful to the setting and character. As a pure science-fiction (and I guess fantasy) story it was on par with, maybe even better, than most of the earlier Hitchhiker's, It even introduced some new characters that I rather liked (Hillman springs to mind). BUT I DIDN'T LITERALLY LAUGH OUT LOUD A SINGLE TIME. This is disappointing in a Colfer book and would be inconceivable with a DNA novel. Colfer's a good writer, but he isn't funny in the same way DNA is. I mean this both in the sense that he's less funny and that his humor style doesn't quite mesh with the setting. Don't get me wrong there was a large amount of ambient comedy, some if it was even pretty good, but Colfer completely failed to produce the grade A stuff that litters DNA's work.

Back in the saddle again.

I just posted a first draft of the first article in what I hope will be a fairly long series. The series is going to be called "Statistical perils in Hitchhiking" and the first entry is on regression to the mean A87780946.

So does this make Leia a Disney princess?

I am tentatively happy about this for two reasons. One, the Avengers (Avengers Assemble in the UK) was awesome and so was all the post merger pixar I've seen, so Disney seems to be up to handling this type of acquisition. Two, Kingdom Hearts. As I don't have all of the consoles the various games have been released on I've done less with KH than I'd like, but I've found what I have played to be good yet somehow lacking. Lacking in Jedi that is. I assume this lack will soon be rectified.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
