Hi there, welcome to h2g2. smiley - smiley

I'm Njan, an ACE, or Assistant Community Editor. I'm supposed to drop in and give you all sorts of helpful URLs, but I'm not on my normal computer, and so I don't have any of these bookmarked... anyway. I'm sure that either some other ACE will come along and he;lp, or I'll turn up later this evening.

Should you or any other ACE return here.. HEEEEELP.
I do not consider myself to be particularly cerebrally challenged but, for someone such as myself who has never heard of a 'markup language' or 'XML' or 'tags', your instructions for using Guide ML are virtually incomprehensible. Why not give an example of how to construct a simple paragraph? It is all very well being told how to insert boxes, footnotes and links but how does one put in a title or a simple (?) paragraph of text? I am sure that I could work all of this out given a few spare hours and a spot of trial and error - but I do not have any more hours to spare.smiley - sadface

No help has come forth yet? Fear not, for I have arrived!

Okay, maybe I'm not a guru or anything. In fact, I didn't know anything about XML or HTML until I started wandering around here. I know enough of the tricks to get by, so I can help you get started, as one who only recently was as clueless as you. smiley - winkeye

I saw your article on Professionism and viewed the source code to see how you went about making those line breaks. That's one way to do it. Another way is to enclose your paragraphs in tags. When you start a paragraph, you put one of those things in front of it. Then, to tell it that you want to end the paragraph at a certain point, you close it with this: . A slash in front of any tag is how you close it. If you put your article in GuideML, you need to close every tag, but in HTML some don't require a close, like the tag you used. Confused yet? smiley - winkeye

So if you wanted a paragraph with the tag, this is how it would look:

This is where the text goes, blah blah blah.

The same basic rules apply to most every tag, so once you've learned this, learning new tags is a cinch. Let me know if you want me to walk you through any others.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have a practice and get back to you when I've discovered the limits of all three synapses. (-;
