Sorry Mr. Adams.
"Lord of The Rings", by J.R.R. Tolkien.
There is nothing I can say that has not already been said; so I merely repeat what others have said, and as JRRT reported himself in the foreword - the book is too short.

After reading the articles under the "Freedom from Faith Foundation" I'm compelled to recall "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco. A great book, which I have to say fueled my interest in religious studies.
My favourite however (although technically a series of three short stories) is Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness".

Well, while I'm sure there are many people out there who consider "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M Pirsig to be a classic, I have to say my favourite book of all time is the follow-up to it, "Lila".

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
