THE BEST POEM OF ALL TIME
Dazinho Started conversation Mar 22, 2000
Actually, Inventory is only my second favourite poem of all time. My first is ALONE by Edgar Allen Poe.
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were - I have not seen
As others saw - I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I lov'd, I lov'd alone.
Then - in my childhood - in the dawn
Of a most stormy life - was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still.
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold-
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by-
From the thunder and the storm
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
Don't think you need to type your poem out - just let everyone know what it is.

I've always liked that one, too, but my favorite (also by Poe!) is The Bells. It's the most beautiful poem I have ever read - after I found it in my 8th grade literature book, I would take it out every afternoon for weeks while I was doing my homework and read it.

In fact, "Annabel Lee" was the first Poe poem I ever read. I had a friend back at home who liked poetry too, and I tried to convince her to read Poe, but she had already read his stories and hated them (she did _not_ like horror). So she wouldn't read his poetry at all, even though I told her that it was not at all like his stories (well, most of it, anyway). O, well. Her loss. Poe is one of my 4 favorite poets.

Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Mary Oliver. The last I wouldn't expect you to know (for one thing, she's still alive ), but her poems are simply beautiful. Some of her books are Twelve Moons, American Primitive, and House of Light, just in case you want to read her.
