Dates and Bugs and Beans

We do tend to take dates for granted, as illustrated by the Y2K business; fear of global breakdown, leading to a 6.2% rise in the sales of canned baked beans.
Even H2G2 assumes that dates are not a problem. Witness:
"So I invite you all to an anti-babelfish manifestation in central park near Speakers corner saturday the 9th of September"
But which year? Not a clue on the page, not a clue.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the lack of any serious discussion of 'cant' in h2g2 might be significant.
I shall ruminate on this for a day or two.

Y2K Bug

Well, today was my first day back at work after the long millennial break, and I have to say that I am disappointed, hurt even.
We have been promised that the Millenium Bug was poised to wreak havoc, and we all know the money, brains and time that have been devoted to preventing this.
Fine.
I thought that despite that, at least one faceless multinational corporation would be brought to its knees - if only for a day.
But no. Nothing. Not a tad. Zilch.
I feel cheated, I really do.
