Shutter Island (2010)

Leonard DiCaprio stars as Teddy Daniels, a U.S Marshall called to Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally on Shutter Island to investigate after a murderer has escaped. He and his partner Chuck played by Mark Ruffalo want to get to work quickly but seem to be hindered in part by the strange head Dr Cawley (Ben Kingsley) who refuses them access to patient and employee records. They consider leaving the island but cannot due to the onset of a huge storm meaning the ferry cannot leave. They plough on and we find out Teddy has additional motivations for accepting the case, which are unveiled through a series of complex flashbacks and other strange occurrences.

It was a really intriguing film which leads you in all different directions right up to the end so top marks for that. It's different from the usual Scorsese type film in the mystery of it, which is kind of reminiscent of David Lynch (kind of) but he totally pulls it off.

'If....' (1968)

This one was worth watching. Even though it's really old it still hits the mark today. Malcolm McDowell stars as Travis, who with a couple of mates form a bit of an alliance against the establishment of their boarding school. What starts as a mild irritation soon grows and McDowell really plays it well, developing the menace which would prevail further in A Clockwork Orange. The boarding school rules are as strict as you like and you can completely understand Travis frustrations as it builds up to a quite stunning climax.

'High Hopes' (1988)

This was just a nice film about a working class couple. It's by Mike Leigh. The mother of Cyril, the male in the couple, is struggling with old age and is becoming forgetful and Cyrils sister is working class except she is nouveau rich but she is wired to the moon trying to be something she is not, she's completely bonkers. Both Cyril and his sister try to do what they think is best for mum, which isn't always what she wants. Throw in some over the top upper class neighbours and there are a few laughs along with some warming moments, set against the backdrop of Thatchers bleak Britain.

'Exam' (2009)

So....Exam. 8 people reach the final round of an interview for a job, at a powerful company. They're all in one room and an invilgilator gives them rules for the 'Exam'. 1. Do not speak to the guard or the invilgilator. 2. Do not spoil your papers. 3. Do not leave the room. He sets a clock to 80 mins and leaves but when the candidates turn over their paper it is completely blank. Nice premise huh? So the 8 of them have to deduce what is required of them. With all the candidates having different personalities the discussions kick off and throughout the film secrets about each of them come to the fore and some good tension builds up and there is some good drama before the big finish.
Some of the acting was a bit wooden in it. One of the woman in particular was getting on my nerves a lot but overall I liked it. After the big reveal at the end I was thinking it over for a good while trying to establish whether I thought it was really clever or a bit silly and after going over it about 50 times, I decided it was clever. It reminded me slightly of a similar film called 'The Killing Room' where the same premise of people locked in a room trying to find out what they're supposed to be doing but 'The Killing Room' pulled it off better but stil this was worth watching!

'Smoke' (1995)

Harvey Keitel owns a cigar shop and some people from the neighbourhood congregate there to tell stories and hang out. The movie dips into each of the characters and a vague plot emerges whereby different people effect each others lives. It's one of those films where not a lot happens but the quality of the dialogue in the character interaction and the fine cast make it a good movie.

'Performance' (1970)

Wow! What a wicked movie this was. It starts off as what seems to be a blatant gangster flick as Chas, a gangland enforcer goes around doing his thing. A job goes wrong and he's got to go into hiding from his employers. He overhears someone speaking about a B&B with a vacancy so he tips up there and secures it. This is no ordinary B&B though. Mick Jagger owns it, well, he plays a washed up rock star who owns it and he lives there with Pherber (Anita Pallenberg) and Lucy (Michelle Breton) and what strange creatures they are. What follows is basically an LSD induced assault on the senses, it's really hard to describe but although it's all alien to Chas, he gets involved in their bohemian ways and Jaggers character is trying to use Chas to get his own mojo back. It gets trippier and trippier right up to a wonderful ending!

'The Secret In Their Eyes'

This really is an absolutely marvelous film. It really blew me away. A retired legal counselor Benjamin Esposito (Ricardo Darin) wants to write a book about a case he investigated 25 years ago. The case was a brutal rape and murder of a young girl and it still plays on his mind after all that time. He struggles to get it started so visits his former boss Irene Menendez Hastings (Soledad Villamil) to discuss it as she was also his superior at the time and the two have a close relationship. The film then moves back and forward from the case at the time to the present day as the story, along with each of the personal journeys of Esposito, Hastings and the grieving husband Ricardo Morales (Pablo Rago) are slowly revealed. The two main characters have superb chemistry, the film has some amazing shots and scenes, particularly one at a football match which is really exciting and there are some great characters including the quite hilarious assistant of Esposito, Pablo, played by Argentinian comic actor Guillermo Francella, who has a great way of answering his phone. It's a great story, well written, no scenes are wasted, and there's a quirky side tale of the missing letter 'A' which is really cool. Do not miss this one whatever you do. Absolutely first rate in every way.
