Welcome to hootoo. Sooner or later an ACE (Assistant Community Editor) will rock up to say hello, and give you some links to interesting bits of the site.
There is a Robert Rankin fan club about somewhere. You'll need to do a search with the box on the top right corner of the screen to find it though.
Other than that, spend a bit of time looking through stuff, and you should be fine jumping into most conversations without an invitation.
