I've been there, as recently as a couple of weeks back. Now have (miraculously!) house with spare space & bored siamese , would welcome in house guest who appreciates photography.
IF you can get to South West France somehow, things could improve hopefully.

That's a sweet offer -- if George Bush wins, it might be a good idea to desert this sinking ship!
I live in Southern California, actually 6 miles due north of Downtown Los Angeles. Library Tower, the tallest building west of the Rocky Mountains, is framed in the middle of the main drag here.
Actually, things seem to be settling down; I am eligible for another 7-8 months of schooling to improve my job prospects, which I see as a breather, while I seek permanent employment.
On the school break, I was registered with 5 temporary agencies, and did not get a single call for any of them -- until Monday morning, for a 2 week job at $8/hr. This would have keep me from starting school and in fact have made me ineligible to do so.
I am NOT dropping a situation which will at least let me get benefits as long as I do well in school, for an iffy chance that I can get very low-paying jobs once in a while. With 5 agencies I couldn't get any jobs in the 5 weeks before school restarted! I can't count on things being any different.
You live in SW France -- where, roughly? I am enamored of the Tuscany region of Italy and, to a lesser extent, the south of France (well, who isn't?).
I will have to learn how to do the shoebox camera -- I remember making camera obscuras for use during a total solar eclipse, when I was a kid. Fun!
