Wrote this for a writing workshop a year or two ago. It's based on a science project from the 6th grade and an incident with a favorite stuffed animal from the 1st and probably a great many other things.

That certainly didn't go where I thought it was going.

But very well done
At first I thought they were fleeing from some sort of persecution, like the Holocaust. The location in Michigan made it less likely, but Phelps might be a part of an organized crime syndicate. The fact that the police are also after them indicates that they are acting outside the law.
Like any good story this one leaves us with questions and makes the characters people we care about.
