More Max, this time created by shamelessly rewriting bits of the 'Crooks' chapter in Steinbeck's "Of Max and Men". I mean Mice.

I'm not sure this works as well as the others.
It seems odd that Max and the narrator, having been wandering around Britain, suddenly become American. But then, perhaps I'm looking for logic where there isn't meant to be any?
And it's sad.

I agree that it's sad. It's a bit of postmodernism, though - the Steinbeck pastiche is kind of cool.
Whether it works depends on where it's ultimately going.

I think it works as well as the other stories, but I agree that it's sad. We've got to love Max, and now he's shot dead.
(I'm only glad there's another Max stories already, and hopefully more, as they're all told retrospectively anyway).
Key: Complain about this post
