Phillip Pullman's His Dark Material Series starting with Golden Compass are a fantasy / religious series focusing on a little girl in a different world, where our souls are on the outside in a form that is animal-like, but most matching to our identities.
The books are a good read, fast paced and for those interested in more core literature also an allegory. Exactly what and how, I cant say without ruining the ending, which is truly surprising.
Just keep in mind, the three books are continous but as different from each other in intent as day from night. Good Luck!
