I would lose the piece about the biological cycle. It rather suggests that women are more slaves to their hormones than men !
Instead, concentrate on Ivy's night out.
Have you read 'Angela's Ashes' by Frank McCourt? That gives a vivid, if harrowing account of a childhood spent in 1930s Limerick

I have yet to read Angela's Ashes. I have read several of Ian McEwan's and am currently reading his "On Chesil Beach". He does the "interior" stuff extraordinarily well and also describes people and their mannerisms in an extremely evocative way.
I'm beginning to understand what I need to do. Problem is I'm not sure I can. That won't stop me trying though!
I suppose too that there's a particular difficulty in this case - it's my late mum whose behaviour I'm talking about
