OK - I could hire a wizz kid to do designs for me, but that requires cash and wouldn't be nearly so much fun as having a go at making a pigs ear of it myself. So, any advise about sites to visit and which softwear to start with gratefuly recieved.

Hey why bother with the computer stuff? Why not go back to the original tech? - buy loads of transparent acetates, and draw them out 
Or go for stop motion techniques Hmmm, i suppose a tad impractical if you want to bang something out in a few months but very very hands on

That will depend on what type of system you're using PC or Mac and what Operating System (ie Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 2000, NT) you are using as well. If it's a Windows based PC, I can point you towards some free animation software. If you're on a Mac, sorry I can't help. Hope this helps.
