Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

Dragging the thread back on topic...

I was directed here by another Researcher and while I've never made a sporran I do know a little bit about leather working. What did you need to know?

Aww, too bad about the pre-mod.

Oddly enough, I've just discovered that my cousin (who was too lazy to find the info himself) actually looked for it and left a message on the Scottish Researchers page already.

Flared Drum, he's never made one before and just wanted to know any useful information and find a pattern. We were googling for a long time and couldn't find anythingsmiley - groan We eventually found *one* pattern, but that was after I opened this thread. So if you have any knowledge that you think might be useful please sharesmiley - ok

And thanks to everyone that's responded so farsmiley - cheers

Pattern? We don' need no steekin' pattern!

At it's most basic the pattern only needs to consist of four bits of leather: the back/flap (ellipse), the side/bottom (long rectangle), the front (half ellipse) and the loop what you feed the tie/belt through.

As for actually sewing it there are three methods:
Use a leather working needle (huge needle with a triangular point) - this requires a lot of elbow grease but is probably the least time consuming.
Use a leather awl (arcane looking thingy with pointy bits) - I have no idea how to use these... I had a go once and gave up.
Punch holes in it and feed the thread through - self explanatory really.

The thread should either be that thick waxed stuff (possibly linen, but not sure) or leather.

Lentilla could probably help with the details of how to work with leather smiley - smiley

Oh, and most importantly of all: Make sure the leather you use is decent quality!

Greatsmiley - ta

Keep the advice coming if you cansmiley - biggrin

I'll make sure my cousin, cpt_joe(who posted above) gets to see it all tomorrow(he's sleeping)!

I've decided to make him look at the responses himself because he hasn't been on since he joined and I'm trying to get him hookedsmiley - evilgrin

I know his mom is supposed to be bringing a sewing machine or something so I don't know if he was planning to use leather or not. But like I said, he's never made one before so who knows!

Thanks so much for all the help! I must be going to bed nowsmiley - sleepy

Goodnight!

If he is hoping to use leather DON'T let him use a sewing machine, he'll be picking bits of needle out of his face if he does.
