A Conversation for Pimm's

PIMMS

I have to confess to being a Pimms freak. It's wonderful stuff! For me the essential ingredients are:

Pimms No1 (obviously!)
Tonic water, not lemonade which makes it too sweet(I use slimline)
Ice, lots of
Lemon,slice of
Cucumber, likewise
Mint, sprig of
Other fruits is slices are ok as optional extras

No coktail umberellas though, please!

Is there any similarity between Pimms and Campari?

Not a lot! They're both alcoholic and (I think)round about the same strength. They're both aperativ type drinks and quite nice in their own right (imho!). But the taste is poles apart. Also one is Italian and the other British - to the core!

I've tried to find out about Campari and all I can find is "a bittersweet concoction made by maturing selected herbs and bitters in a secret spirit base". I wonder if Monty knows what the "secret" is? But I think Campo was 1860 so it could be an attempt at Imatationano Italiano.

I think if you're out of mixers, you can drink Pimms straight. Campari's more like drinking draino - I've sipped it once maybe, when my old mater was dieting. Which indicates too that it's a girl's drink. Pimm's is more ambivalent(?).

Spose now I'll need to buy a litre "for research". It'll be cheaper to fill my car with 4-star (or mumtaz as it's called).

If you watch F1 racing when it's in Europe there's Campo adds all over the place so someone's drinking it. Which reminds me, what the hell is Magnetto Marrelli?

Neither is meant to be drunk straight though and neither, I would have thought would be very nice like that. Campari needs lots of soad and ice; Pimms is a failure the essential bits I mentioned earlier. Like a lot of things in life they're much better if you take a little trouble.

PS. There doesn't seem to be a smiley for Pimms(or campari!)

Pimms is loverly!
I remember being told once by an extremely upper-class fellow I went to college with that mint should never be used, as it spoils the flavour. He insisted that it should be borage instead.

Since borage was a favourite ingredient in Victorian throat lozenges I don't see how it would improve taste other than soothing the throat after shouting. I've had borage in tea and unless there is another variety I'd take a little mint every time.

As someone who is famous for having bought lots of Pimms to use up the mint that had run amok in my absence, I have to agree heartily. It's especially nice with applemint, but don't bother with currymint smiley - star

Its a new one on me but I'll try it.

I think though that mint enhances the flavour.

What wonderful memories!

Every boxing Day we used to have one huge midday drinks party when we would invite all our friends to Pimms and a finger lunch.
Early in the morning our five children would be up and everyone would be busy. Some would cut up the oranges into slices and then halve those. Someone would cut lemons up in a similar fashion. Then one of the children would be detailed to thread alterrnate orange, and lemon slices and a marischino cherry onto a cocktail stick.

The many bottles of Pimms would be placed in ice as well as the lemonade (I think it was). All the glasses would be placed on the huge dining room table plus some of the finger lunch which included hundreds of special Greek meat balls which the cook and I had made,
Finally there was the mint and the blue flowers of the borage.

The - would we party!!. Those were the days. But what happy memories.

Thanks Serendipity for bringing them back.

Pimms is my daily reward to myself for going to work.

In the summer, I come in the front door, drop the bags and head for the fridge. I pour a slug of Pimms into a tall glass and top it up with Dry Ginger Ale, add a few ice cubes and head out to the garden to sit on my swing seat with the crossword until the sun moves off that part of the garden.

In the winter I do much the same, but put my feet up indoors and listen to The Archers while eating more cashew nuts than are good for me.

I think Pimms should be available on the NHS smiley - smiley

"Yes please smiley - nurse. I shall have a large glass of Pimms - with blue borage flowers , lemon, orange and a red cherry. and I shall go home tomorrow."
I am sure that I was healthier when I drank more!!
I never had a smiley - hangover. I would just smiley - winkeye and smiley - cuddle. Lovely!!!
