h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

As the light grows each day we look forward to Solstice. The day when the shadows are furthest from the mind and the heart.

But as we look forward we must not miss the darkness that is growing in our land. This week that darkness took a bold step forward to claim the hearts and minds of more of our people.

Across the country more people were persuaded by lies and half-truths twisted to seem reasonable, and my mind is transported back to Germany 1933. Then the National Socialists seemed reasonable, appealing to the petty fears and prejudices of the comman man, offering hope based upon an unrevealed darkness.

Look now to Barking and Dagenham where the standarten-fuhrers of Nick Griffin's Neu-Sturmabteilung have become the second power on the council. Look closely at the men that surround him. Hard-faced veterans of Combat 18 and the NF. Not men who care for life, liberty or the pursuit of justice, but whose only thought is to seize power and dominion.

You may hate New Labour, despise the Liberal-Democrats and distrust the green Tories, but each of those is committed to our quasi-democracy. No one with a clear memory of the 20th century can seriously believe that a fascist government would be inclined to share power with us untermensch?

I, for one, will fight against them until my last breath.

Let them come, for I have seen them off before and fear them not.

That's scary stuff Matholwch! All we heard here, is that Tone and his lot were going down... (well, not Tone himself, obviously..)

I remember back in 1983, Dr Heine, our lecturer in German history, making similar points about parties here in NZ. He knew whereof he spoke, as his father had been part of the Weimar Government replaced and subsequently monstered by the Nazis.

Good for you, Math! A few days before the election, I saw Billy Bragg in concert at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, on his "Hope not hate" tour. During the gig, he explained how he was a Berking boy, born and bred, and hoped that his fellow Berkingonians () were not taken in by the poison of the fascists. I expect he's at least as p***ed off as we are by the election results!
