It is much richer and darker than this flash photo shows but it's very nice to work with and apparently a renewable resource:

As it comes from a tree farm. Anyone else tried it? One problem is that there isn't a filler made that matches the colour so you must use plugs or sawdust-and-glue, neither of which I was very happy with.

It is also a purple hearth.... 
(and a very nice one, too, I might add.
From your description the other day, I was expecting over-all white wood with the centre of the grain being purple. It appears to be more over-all purple.
