Seti, the 'search for extra terrastial intelligence', is a way for humans to search the galaxy for other forms of intelligent life. Intelligent lifeforms understand the universe and know it as an ordered system. They therefore send out random messages to be detected by other possible life. Humans do not understand the universe fully and view it as random, so they search for ordered messages in a random background. This is the equivalent of searching for hay in a haystack, never knowing that a needle exists!
