This is my first article. I don't really know how high a standard the writing is supposed to be at, but I made an attempt anyway

And a pretty damn good attempt too This is a very good piece of writing which I think could go straight into Peer Review (I presume you did the same thing I just did and searched to make sure that there isn't already an edited entry about cross country
).
A few suggestions for the entry:
I don't think that 'Cross Country' needs to be capitalised throughout the entry.
simular - similar
Here's another edited entry which you could link to with a little mention of its subject - Cross Country Skiing A845750
How about a mention of the kind of terrain and weather conditions wich cross country runners have to deal with?

In order to submit this entry to PR (if that was your your intention), you'll first have to remove it from the Writing Workshop. Just ask if you have any problems with that.

Impressive. But may I add a couple of points. The world cc championships are held in the spring, because most distance athletes have a more endurance based training programme in the winter and this type of racing suits them. Also, and I'm showing my age now, cc used to include things like jumping hedges and country gates but the majority of cc races are now run over public parks and , believe or not, golf courses. Deserves to go far. Good luck
