h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

This is my first journal entry, a fact that will no doubt have the rest of the world's population jumping for joy and streamers from the rooftops. I have, in one evening, discovered BBC Online's "Cult" section, been amazed by the amount of Hitchhiker's-related web-activity that still goes on, and followed a link to this place. Who knows - maybe I'll be able to add something witty and informative to the already impressive bank on knowledge stored here, although I wouldn't like to bet on it.

It occurred to me that this journal was just another weblog, but in retrospect that simply isn't true. Well, in a way it's true - this is yet another outlet for an internet user to let off steam and post potentially embarrasing opinions for the world to see - but this weblog differs because it's attached to h2g2, a project which I find amazingly worthwhile and exciting.

Why? Well, since the dawn of time mankind (used here as a generic term intended to cover both genres, so feminists can stop be annoyed right now) has attempted to catalogue his existence, to give meaning to the things he sees around him. The internet gives us a chance to do it properly. h2g2 has the potential to reach a global audience, and, by tapping into that audience, draw on a bank of experience that stretches around the globe. It's an awesome prospect.

I hope that, in some small way, I'll be able to bring a little something to that global knowledge-bank - make a deposit, if you will. I certainly hope so, because I intend to make plenty of withdrawals.
