Nothing cements a relationship than a good old natter. But the conversation has to centre around him, or there's no point in having it. Most people like to talk about themselves. Even if they deny that, you can usually get someone to talk abvout themselves with a couple of carefully placed leading questions:
Where are you from? Do you have a large family? Where are they now? Do you get to see/, talk/, be/ with them much? Do you like to travel? Where have you been/ like to go? What do you do? What are your goals for the future? Where will you be in a year? Five years?
Make sure that you are drinking continuosly. By the time the individual starts to open up with information about themselves you can hide the yawns with your glass. Now, when you get drunk, pass out and have your first hangover together the relationship has been through the mini-mariage. Including the "no sex please, we're British" phase.
