I recently read two very different books; Shades of Grey 1:The Road to High Saffron by Jasper Fforde and To My Dearest Friends by Patricia Volk. Shades of Grey follows a young man though a journey of love and political awakening in a really freaking weird setting. The novel is set in Chromatacia's were most of the population is atleast partially colorblind and your position in life is determined by the colors you can perceive correctly. I stayed up till 3 am to finish it and got in a fair bit of trouble as result, so I'd recommend it. To My Dearest Freinds explored marriage, affairs and ageing via two New York women who go on a quest after a deceased mutual friend wills them a mysterious letter. I liked it far less than Shades of Grey, but I think that was largely because I'm way outside core demographic of urbanite women who have at some point been married. The writing was up to snuff so if you're into that sorta book it's probably worth reading.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
