When the pulse is generated by the disintegration of the coil is it an undirected pulse in all directions or does it travel in a single direction allowing it to be aimed at a target? Perhaps that is the purpose of the Faraday cage, I'm a bit unclear on that.

the pulse would be in the direction of the explosions propagation, the faraday cage is mearly a common method of protecting electrical equiptment from the emp effect
