Well, here is my researcher number cleverly manipulated (mangled) to equal the answer to the question of life, the universe, and everything. (trumpets)
1 * (9-3) * (9-8) * 7 = 42!!!!!

I think this one might be cheating a bit, but it IS in order! (is it cheating to make half of the numbers negative so they add up right?) In short, your researcher number is too tricky. (mine is better: 1*9+3*8+1*9 = 42! Haven't you always known you should have been born me?)
But anyway:
-1-9+(-3*8)*9+7 = 42 (I think)

(1+9+3+8)*(9-7) = 42
(oh, and tell the Ponzo that (1+9)*4+2+7-7 = 42 as well)
