So, I got home from work to find the landlord had already fixed the cable (he used to work for the company before they were bought out). Apparently a big icicle fell off the roof and pulled the cable out of the outside wall. He replaced it with a new one, and our connection is even faster than before now.

This probably means that I won't feel like being in front of the computer at all this evening or tomorrow morning, right?

Wow! That's an unusual way to break a modem

My last one was struck by lightning. And then they tried to charge me for repairing the wire from the street to the house

We'd had quite a bit of snow, then bitter cold, then sort of a warm-up, then bitter cold, then... you know how that goes. There are some icicles on buildings I see walking from my train to home, that look like stalactites and reach all the way from the roof to the ground, as big around as my leg.

Oh, and tell me about the lightning strikes. That three days we were without any power this past summer (in 95°F + heat) and I had to toss a good amount of food, and the electric company refused to reimburse us.

I'm always inordinately pleased with myself whenever I solve a technical problem.

Our vacuum cleaner stopped sucking recently. I discovered that a small, rubber gasket had fallen off and got lost. I made a new one from duct tape.
