So, this afternoon I find out that one of my favorite Chicago bands, Naked Raygun, are playing January 2 and 3. They're playing with Hot Water Music, who are OK, and on the January 3 date, they're playing with two other great local acts, the Methadones and the Arrivals.
God what a sweet show that would be.
BUT
They're playing at the SHITTIEST venue in town- House Of Blues. God, I hate the place with a burning passion, and the owners treat their customers (unless you're some hoity-toity VIP or something) like something they scraped off the bottoms of their shoes.
So, the question is, should we, or shouldn't we?
Sigh.

Go. Don't let the venue put you off.
Get someone to buy your drinks for you or buy them all in one go... or, ideally, smuggle your own in with you. Kill two birds with one stone: Hear some good bands and disrespect a rubbish pub.

Drinks? I never drink at gigs.
Well, sometimes I'll get a bottle of water, if the heat's set too high.

Hit "post" because I thought someone was coming with some work I've been waiting on ALL DAY. I'd normally be leaving in half and hour and have an appointment this evening. I'll need an hour just to get what absolutely *must* be done before I leave. Someone had better hurry...
Meanwhile, I'll try to psych myself up so I won't be put off by the lousy venue.

I hate snotty clubs. I don't mind if the point of the club is *just to be snotty* there isn't any (well much) appeal in that for me, it's actually funny that some people will pay seventy trillion quid for a bottle of heineken but when it's just some little salsa club or something then it pisses me off.
I got turned away from this little jazz club once, quite rudely, when all my friends got let in. I started walking home then just thought- stuff this, turned round, walked back, jumped the que and just walked in straight past the bouncers and the paying in desk. Without paying. It was weird.

Go but continue to hate the snotty club
(as for work - just go....)

One time I had some idiot bouncer at one of K's gigs try to charge me the cover. I was carrying a cymbal bag, a kick pedal, and a snare at the time.
I'll see if K wants to go (the Saturday show especially appeals) and if so we can endure the snotty club to see the great acts.
As for work... I'm sticking around for another 30 minutes as previously agreed with my boss (when he asked what time I need to leave, and I told him "by four", his response was "why, will you turn into a pumpkin?" ). If they're not ready by then, my boss (the CFO) and the budget manager will have to finish up without me.
It's not THEIR fault, though. It's a certain someone upstairs who changed his mind for the upteenth time and then wanted the final numbers with no notice.

I couldn't get in to sound check at my last gig because there was a flippin under 18's night on downstairs and the bouncers wouldn't let any of us in without criminal record checks or something.
Once we had got in it turned out Jim, my mate, hadn't booked a sound engineer and the place didn't have a desk so we ended up having to have all four of us coming off the aux sends on my broken mixer(doesn't have a working main out). It was a bit nightmarish.

Go, but take someone else* to smash the place up.... I'm free if I can find the travel money
I swear my most embarasing moment ever was being refused to be served in the most* dire* awful low-down pub ever in/near Camden London.... I think its even the kind of pub where they'd serve booze to tramps.... and thanks to Roymondo/socket they'd not serve me because I was with him*

If you love the music - might be an onl chance to see that combo.
GO!
You are probably not the only one to feel that way about the place!

Well...a good venue can make a lot of difference...but beggars can't be etc. etc.
I shall mention this over lunch to a friend/colleague. When we were in Orlando for work, he dragged me to the HoB Gospel breakfast.

I'm starting to see a picture now. Is this place a kind of franchise theme pub?
I've been to a few of those, they are usually quite wrong, the main offender were I am being an Irish pub. Now, I've been to Irish pubs, in Ireland, and the main feature they have to distinguish themselves from the non-Irish-Irish pubs is that THEY ARE FULL OF IRISH PEOPLE! Not just a bunch of wallies. .It's not even like you can pretend to be Irish without people looking at you like you are a freak, for some reason an Irish themed pub is the *worst place you can pretend to be Irish.

The main thing you need to know about them is that they're owned by Disney.

OMG
That is... so wrong ... So utterly and totally wrong... on each, and every level, probably including those levels as yet un-considered by the people who define the 'levels'.
I used to go to a rather nice 'Irish theme pub', in England, which worked well, mainly because whoever who was who themed it kinda lost the plot at some point and just went 'sod it that'll do'.... and so it just ended up more-or-less just like any other pub... and came over all the more better for it
Awful music venues are... awful.. we have two in my town, both awful and both together formign the only two music venus in town I don't know why but here, unlike most places I've been/lived there isn't a tendancy to just put groups/bands on in pubs,

There's an "Irish Pub" in the next street over from here. The owner has painted the entire inside orange, without knowing that there is any symbolic significance to this. Words fail me.
Key: Complain about this post
