I finally gave in a couple of weeks ago, and set up a MySpace. Mainly for "RL" friends, various band stuff, and "bulletins" from various interesting groups... but all are welcome.

I'm still resisting, This and various blogs are *quite* enough for now.

Mind you, it's damned interesting the way 'the kids' are now using social networking technology to organise their RLs.

Jaysus, though - aren't today's kids just so smart? When I volunteer at Oxfam on Saturdays, I get to hang out with 16/17 year olds. Last week, the manager asked me how I could stand all their constant chatter. It's the reason I go! They're such a lovely bunch.

Myself, I've not got much of an RL to organise smiley - sadface

Well, as you can see, I haven't done much with it, overall, other than adding the odd friend/band/etc. And I'm lucky if I get around to updating my blog once wevery week or two. It's why I only have the one generic blog. Hell, I spent the better part of three hours farting around on Booktribes yesterday morning, and I've barely put a dent in just the stuff we own.

RL keeps me plenty busy, though it's not difficult for me to organize, either. I rather prefer it that way.

Some of today's kids are pretty darn smart. Precocious, too. I was riding the train home the other day, and it was packed. A young guy and girl, about high school age, were sitting together. He offered me his seat (pretty unusual occurence- I once gave up my seat to an elderly lady when every other passenger on the car was a fella) and then proceeded to talk my ears off for the duration of my ride. He had me in stitches.

I kind of wish I'd had this internet stuff back when I was in high school and college. I can think of several instances when studying or other projects would've been a lot easier, and more interesting, than merely perusing the card catalogs at the local lib. smiley - winkeye

I'm pretty sure that if H2 hadn't gone broke in its early days, it could have easily developed into a pioneering social networking site. The enthusiasm and sheer level of innovation was incredible. Until they drove into a financial brick wall, that was. Not much call for advertising revenues back then..

Nowadays, this place is like a terrace row of houses to me - a couple of good, upstanding neighbours, nice chats about subjects we're happy to talk about, sparrows in the back garden, nicely laid personal spaces, the occasional spot of bad weather..

*sigh* - you can almost hear the whistle from the factory wi' the workers comin' home for tea..

That's not a totally inaccurate assessment of my feelings toward computers a good amount of the time, dragonqueen. smiley - laugh

I remember when I got my very first own computer in the early 90s- no internet yet, though- and a friend gave me some of her stash of floppy disks. Problem was mine still used the really floppy, 5-odd inch ones.

I'm totally convinced computers are all male... they never do what you expect of them...

Just one example:
When I start up my laptop at home at lot of icons show up to the right at the grey thingy below (tray?). When I start up at work half of them are missing like Skype, bloglines, sound etc. The programmes are running and makes the usual noices when a message arrives.

I can't access my work server from home at all anymore- but I can access the remote server from my work computer. smiley - weird I've got to get that sorted before I take my vacation in July. I'd like to have the option of at least checking email if I feel like it.

I'll be nice to my home computer, though- it works pretty well and does everything I've wanted it to do, since I upgraded the stock DVD burner to a better quality one (one that doesn't wear out after two months of use). I think I've got the scanner working (the printer still prints like crap and I'm still debating buying a new one), so I'm hoping it'll cooperate long enough for me to scan all of my old vacation photos from various trips and back them all up on CDs.

Stumbled across something rather well-timed in today's email from The Onion. For those of us who have Real Lives, and really *don't* have a lot of time for all of this sort of thing:

*giggles*

Don't know if it's an age thing, but I really don't like MySpace.

Been browsing a few times since some of the hatchlings have hangouts there. That place is sort of creepy.

I prefer these old squares smiley - biggrin

You know, I have to say that MySpace has proven handy in regards to networking- it's worked as an early warning system for several gigs and local film and art festivals we've been interested in.
