hi psychocandy
dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Started conversation Feb 28, 2003
you seem like a like minded individual - so I thought I'd say hi...I loved your LOTR cut 'n' paste..top effort.
I've only been at the site for a couple of months, but I think I've found my feet reasonably well (thanks to the unofficial aceing of superdogmonkey)...I see on your space that we have a couple of cross-overs on books, films and history - I did all the discworld stuff, but got a little bored with pratchett - I began to find it a little formulaic (spelling??) although I've heard 'piramids' is good, any thoughts? I did all the Harry Potter books in close succession - and have to sympathise with the addition - have you tryed Philip Pullman? I've not read any, but they are supposed to be like a bit more grown-up version of Rowling.
Got to admit to a draw to the middle ages myself...I have a few friends that do the full on re-enactment stuff (hard-core as opposed to geeks) which is always a laugh (especially in the beer tent post-battle)...
spend a few spare moments in front of the video myself - loved fight-club..actually have you seen 'dusk-til-dawn' - I saw it the other night - very wierd tarantino road/horror movie...i won't give anything away, suffice to say I wonder what you might think (looking at your list)?
can't say i share your love of punk (although I have a feeling superdogmonkey might try to subliminally draw me in)...I'm a big zappa fan - but musical appreciation spans all genre from John Denver to Black Sabbath....I was interested to see They Might Be Giants on your list...I really loved 'Flood' but never picked up anything else recommendations?? anyway....hi I'm dugdog (a.k.a. Corla Planktun).... see you around.

Hi dugdog (aka Corla Plankton)!
I'm glad you enjoyed my LOTR cut'n'paste- I thoroughly enjoyed working on it. What a sick mind I seem to have.
H2G2 is such a wonderful place! I've been here just under a year, have made a few new friends from around the world, and actually learn quite a bit from many of the guide entries. I'm an official ace myself, although I haven't been doing as much as I should these past couple of months.
I really liked the Discworld books, thought they were hilarious, although I do get a bit tired of Vimes and the Watch at times. Haven't tried Pullman yet, but have heard good things about him, so I'll have a go at one of his books sometime soon. Thanks for the recommendation!
While I've never participated in a re-enactment, I've been several times to a dinner and show theater here in the Chicago area, Medieval Times. They've got jousts and the whole lot, it's heaps of fun! Each summer, there's the Bristol Renaissance Fair up just north of the Wisconsin/Illinois border, and I've been up there quite a few times, too. It's a lot of fun!
'From Dusk Till Dawn' is an awesome movie! I'm a huge fan of Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis, and Tarantino was brilliant too. There's just too much to love about that film! I've worked in bars like that- Have you ever seen 'River's Edge'. with Dennis Hopper, Crispin Glover, and various others? Another excellent film, if you haven't seen it, you ought to check it out!
I think They Might Be Giants are brilliant- they've got a fairly new CD called 'No!', which is really cool. 'Flood' has some of their best tunes on it, but they've got so many good albums, like 'Apollo 18', 'Mink Car', 'John Henry'... One song I'm especially partial to is 'Why Does the Sun Shine (The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas)', which is a rocked-up 'cover' version of a song from an educational album called 'Space Songs'. It's probably the funniest song they've ever done. They have an anthology album called 'Dial-A-Song: 20 Years of They Might Be Giants', which contains that song, and most of their other really good ones.
Hopefully Superdogmonkey and myself will be able to bring you over to the dark side, as far as punk rock goes. I've only recently gotten into Zappa, up till now my experience was limited to 'Valley Girl'. My musical tastes are actually quite diverse, too, and I'm always looking for new things to try. Superdogmonkey and his missus have one helluva record collection, from what I've heard. If he ever recommends anything, I'd run right out and get it- he's never steered me wrong thus far!
Well, I'd best get off here and get some things done, but I've enjoyed making your acquaintance, and look forward to seeing you around. Pop by and say hi any time! Take care,
~psychocandy

ok so I've decided you are my official ace (as opposed to my unofficial ace who is sdm)...so I'll ask an ace type question...when you submit an entry..who decides on the 'score' - in the bit where it says 'status' and 'score' after you do a search and get the big list up??
I've not actually read any Pullman yet - but SO MANY people whos opinion i respect have said to, I thought I'd pass it on. Maybe we should both read Pullman at the same time (chose a book) and compare notes?
Funny you should mention Bristol - as that's where I live (or did we know live nearby in the country-side) Bristol UK...the re-enactment stuff I've been dragged along to I've mostly enjoyed (some duff ones) - although I've never done the full-on jousting stuff...I was thrown into the deep end as a pike-man in the English Civil War....and MAN it was scary!! REALLY physical, proper fighting - stopping only just short of killing each other! I kept my head down and hoped for the best (I'm not a violent person)..but as I said all friends in the beer tent afterwards....
Dusk til Dawn was a bit of a surprise for me - as I had no idea of the vampire thing - so as far as I was concerned I'm in the middle of a fairly standard albeit entrtaining tarantino road movie..when all of a sudden Miss Satanica (or whatever her name was) morphs into bitch from hell - FANTASTIC! suffice to say, well worth throwing another log on the fire for...
Looks like I'm going to have to see River's Edge...too...
as for the rest (zappa and TMBG)...we'll save that chat for another day......it's late here, and I'm
g'nite

I'm pleased to have been chosen as your 'official' ace! As for the question about how the relevance percentage is determined, I'm not positive, and would have to ask someone more tech-savvy, but I always thought it referred to how close the article or its title was in terms of relevance to the actual words you'd typed in the 'search' box. I'll look into that for you and see if I can get an answer.
Perhaps we could read a Pullman at the same time... that could be fun. I'll definitely check him out, if he's so highly recommended!
That's funny about your being from Bristol, the name of the town where the Fair is located is Bristol, Wisconsin. It's a couple hours' drive from me here in Chicago (depending on who's driving, it can take slightly less). Nice little town, lots of cows and cheese. Watching the jousts at the dinner theater is as close to one that I'd like to be- I'm a notorious klutz and would be likely to break my neck or something. Re-enacting a REAL fight would scare the crap out of me! The beer tent sounds more my speed...
I loved that scene in Dusk Till Dawn, too. That one biker (his name in the film was Sex Machine) with the gun built into his fly.. that cracked me up, and Cheech Marin was great, too. Tarantino makes some fine movies. Of course, I could go on all day about great movies. But I won't.
Well, I'm off once again to try to accomplish something quasi-productive... 'talk' to you soon!

dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Posted Mar 4, 2003
yeah the gun in the pants was where I realised there were a few laughs coming...
and please feel free to go on about great movies - I'm always happy to hear...
faves that come into my head
Human Traffic
Pulp Fiction
Being John Malcovich
Little Voice
O Brother Where Art Tho....
Trainspotting
Fargo
LOTR 1 +2!
Matrix
Minority Report (good, but didn't really need Tom Cruise)
obviously there are a million more, but you can never remember until nodding off or in the bath...or both...but if you've missed any of the above, let me know and I'll fill you in with a synopsis...
Happy to hear your list sometime..I LOVE a good movie....

I haven't seen Human Traffic yet, I'd love to hear about it! A synopsis would be great, some time. I liked the rest of those (but why must they ruin a good flick by putting Tom Cruise in?), especially LOTR 1 & 2, Pulp Fiction, and Being John Malkovich. You've no idea how relieved I am to know there's someone else out there who naps in the bath...
I've got a million faves, too, here's a few of them to start with (in no particular order)
The Boondock Saints
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Repo Man
Straight to Hell
The Usual Suspects
Roadside Prophets
The Way of the Gun
Elvis Stories (such silliness!)
High Fidelity
Reservoir Dogs
American Beauty
Fight Club
and Meet the Feebles, which is basically a Muppet porno
I also have yet to see a David Lynch or John Waters film I didn't like
ooh ooh I almost forgot about Tapeheads, which is much less serious than most of the above mentioned. I just love it 'cause it cracks me up!

Sorry to butt in here but strangely, last week I asked the book club about P. Pullman - F89564?thread=250213&post=3020370#p3020370
I would be up for a joint reading if that's ok.
hi psychocandy
psychocandy-moderation team leader Posted Mar 5, 2003
Hiya, SDM! You can 'butt in' any time you like. I've heard of His Dark Materials before. If we all three agreed upon something, a joint reading could be a lot of fun!
... We're not going to cut'n'paste it when we're done, are we?

Never heard of that book. .......... sorry.
I think it should be something that would be sacrelige (sp?) to do.
ie:
Narnia books
To kill a Mockingbird
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
oooohhhhh - Harry Potter

dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Posted Mar 5, 2003
yeah...ron's gotta bone herminone.....
oops..sorry, did I say that out loud....
also the 'Order Of The Pheonix' was a guess at a Pullman book rather than a suggestion for cut n paste.....may be the Dark Materials Trilogy is a better bet - at least we know it exists! The first one is called 'The Golden Compass' - shall we all start there?
not allowed to start reading til we all get a copy tho'......
hi psychocandy
psychocandy-moderation team leader Posted Mar 5, 2003
'Order of the Phoenix' is the title of the new HP book coming out in June, actually. Maybe Ron *will* bone Hermione in this one... well, maybe not just yet, but it has to happen eventually, I agree.
Hey, I'm always up for a threesome! (did I just say that out loud?) If you guys would like to read 'The Golden Compass', I'll find a copy, and let you know once I've got it. Will have to buy it used, I'm a bit short on cash at the moment. Dugdog, you said it was a trilogy? I'll likely wind up wanting them all by the time we're through with the first one.
As for a new cut'n'paste... SDM's right, it has to be something utterly sacreligious! I never would have thought of 'Charlie & the Chocolate Factory', but boy could I have fun with the Oompa- Loompas!
hi psychocandy
dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Posted Mar 5, 2003
Charile is a good call - but as I'm designing the new Roald Dahl Museum at the moment..I feel I should steer well clear...I can see the front page of The Guardian now....Dahl Designer In Chocolate Scandal...so I think I'll stay well away....
HP's a better bet I reckon...we need to find a worthy chapter....
How about the ultimate.........a Mills and Boon / Bible cross-over
hi psychocandy
psychocandy-moderation team leader Posted Mar 20, 2003
Mills & Boon & the Bible! Dugdog, that's effing BRILLIANT!! I'd definitely want to get in on that kind of action!
HP would be fine as well. I'll just have to entertain my Oompa-Loompa fantasies in private.

dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Posted Mar 20, 2003
excellant! I reckon that's the one - we'll need superdogmonkey approval to proceed - and let's not forget reading that pullman when we all find the time..

Mills & Boon + Bible? Sound great but could prove hard ie:
We will all have to get hold of the same M & Boon book (do you realise how many there are?) + plus the shame of buying one in the first place. I could buy a 2nd hand one and p/copy a couple of chapters and send to you both (I work in a Print shop and have 4 copiers to choose from!) so no problems there.
I suppose then we can choose a bible chapter.
Do we mix and match them up ........
kinda like.......
Bible line - Adam begat Cain........
Mills & boon line - she swooned with passion ....
and then combine them etc???
Let me know what you both think.
hi psychocandy
dugdog <a.k.a. - corla planktun...buffer of the tiny ruby> Posted Mar 20, 2003
ok - ever practical..well done sdm...
I reckon you photocopy and send..I'll need the chapter of the bible we choose too as I don't own a copy and I'll be damned if I'm spending good money on one...maybe that should read I'll be saved...? (unlikely)
but I reckon it should be as mixed as you like.....
adam sensed eves trepidation, moving closer he begat his beating cain and she felt herself wilting under his touch like a plauge of locusts....
kind of...
hi psychocandy
superdogmonkey Posted Mar 20, 2003
So, I'll send you a copy of M & Boon AND a copy of Bible chapter ..... I don't want you getting worn out with all the effort you are putting in to this ...... maybe you could send your rough ideas to P/Candy and she can type it out for you?
