Imagine a series of washers with the holes slightly larger than the diameter of the projectile, sometimes the voids are filled with fine metal mesh. As the gases pass between chambers the velocity and pressure drop, this will in a well designed device provide a high attenuation ratio. This a simplified explanation, but the basics are there. Needless to say, these do not work with revolvers, automatic guns that have a moving breech or ammunition that is supersonic, as film studios would let you believe.

I can tell you we need PEOPLE silencers.
with CMS, NBC and the KGB poluitng the air, one needs an attenuator for the president of ther Galaxy at times (you would if you had three heads).
