Is that photo programme any good? I.e. does it have the functionality of Adobe Photoshop?

I ask since our uni's free (to us employess) version of photoshop has been rendered inoperable on one of my macs due to my 'upgrade' to OSX Lion. A free/cheap alternative would be most useful

(I'm led to believe GiMP is the one to try but...)
