Hi kea
I have Perian ( http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian ) installed in system preferences but this is only a QuickTime plugin. If you have QT Pro you can open the file and save it in another format. You need QT Pro to be able to save though.
There are some other options. CNet rate flv Crunch - http://download.cnet.com/Flv-Crunch/3000-2194_4-10909295.html . This is another option - http://www.macflvconverter.net/ .
Hope this helps.

FLV Crunch looks like it might do it.
What's the file format I should be converting too?

I'm not sure how helpful this is - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_codec .
You could try H.264 or MPEG4 formats. I'm no expert so don't rely too heavily on what I say.
I have another piece of software called MPEG Streamclip which allows you to convert and save video in various formats. It can be found here - http://www.squared5.com/ .

I used Crunch to convert to DV and ended up with a 11GB file It's been ages since I did any of this and I'd forgotten what a drama it is. I have a feeling that I can use some of the mac SW and then maybe I have to use MactheRipper to compress the file? Can't remember....

If you want to end up with an "ordinary" DVD you need to convert it directly to MPEG-2. Then you just need a DVD authoring package to drag it into.

Dvd authoring package? Is there something on my mac that does that? Or Mactheripper? I've done this before, ages ago, and can't recall what I used.

I think iDVD, which should be on your computer, does it, though I've never used it.
