Help! Old Mac OS needed.. (for Classic in Snow Leopard)

I'm trying to get Classic running under Snow Leopard (on a MacBook) and am stuck. I either need an old system (not attached to particular hardware) or something that will enable me to join together system 7.5.3 from here: http://download.info.apple.com/Appl...er_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/

What I'm actually trying to do is this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread...?threadID=2073321&start=65&tstart=0 and I got as far as installing 10.4 (Tiger - the last OS to work with Classic mode) but couldn't install System 9 presumably becuase it's the iMac version (the MacBook wouldn't startup from the CD ROM) so then I went to here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060509180914879 I got as far as installing SheepShaver, and managed to find a pre-extracted ROM file so got round that little hiccup (2 hours worth of hiccuping) but iMac system 9 doesn't work with SheepShank either - I get the old frozen screen. So then I tried to extract the files I mentioned above http://download.info.apple.com/Appl...er_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/ but cannot get them join up and I've tried everything that I can think of. I need Disk Copy 6.1 for which I need Classic, and so it goes round...

Any ideas, all you Mac gurus?

Thanks!

gj

Hi gj

I'm trying to guess why you might want to run Classic and especially any OS before 9.2 in Classic in the first place smiley - erm. Feel free to tell me to mind my own business.

Oh I seesmiley - eureka. All to do with printer problems. As I recall Classic would only work properly if OS 9.2.2 was installed before OS 10.? up to Tiger as you say. In 10.6 there is no longer even support for Power PC Macs let alone AppleTalk.

My two Intel iMacs talk happily (over wireless) to an HP printer connected to a Netgear Router via an Ethernet cable. Not much help to you though.

Have you had a look over at Google groups and the like to see whether anybody has hacked a workaround for your problems. I once found a printer driver hack for an Epson printer not compatible with OS 10.1.

Found this - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#apple

Maybe you have already seen it though?

Hi turvy,

I can run Classic on an Intel Mac using SheepShaver, but only if I get a compatible OS, in other words not a version dependent on hardware (like my iMac version). I think I have somebody sending me a re-joined version of 7.5.3 (fingers crossed that it will work!). Thanks.

I had seen that, thanks. But in order to print using the IP/LPD protocol I need to change my printer's IP address, and for that I need to use Apple Laserwriter Utility, and for that I need to run Classic...

Thanks,

Have a look at your printer's manual. I'm pretty sure you would be able to do that directly at the printer, although it would probably waste a half-dozen sheets of paper as it prints out each configuration change. (I used a networked HP back when I worked at Aberdeen Cable...)

No, according to the manual it's either the Apple Laserwriter Utility or Telnet. I tried the Telnet method a few months ago but it didn't work - don't know why.

Ah, OK. So you have a Laserwriter, rather than an HP, then. Sorry for my confusion. smiley - blush
