my righthand shift key had lots of gunk under it, so i decided to clean under it with a wee paintbrush, infortunatly the key cam off, so i now have a rubber doodah and three little bits of plastic (which must be parts of the key) how do i put it back on?

Laptop or external keyboard? Model number? They're all different.

It's usually on the sticker on the bottom of the iBook, next to the serial number.

there aint no stickers on the underside, would the model number be in any of the documentatin or on the box?

Yup, on one of the white stickies with a barcode on the end of the box, IIRC.

OK...
Here's the service manual: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/files/whiteiceibookrepair.pdf
Here are the key replacement instructions: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Manuals/Apple-Key-Replacement.pdf
And if the key is actually broken here's a page where you can order a replacement without having to buy a whole keyboard: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=16370 (Dollar prices only...)

I notice it tells you to "type in the key you want to replace"...
That's a lot of bloody good if all you have is your iBook - it'll be the one key you can't type!

Damn. I forgot it was your shift key. Shift keys and "Delete" are the only ones you can't buy separately.

Hey peet you angel,
Just followed the link from this thread to instructions for fixing keyboards, been using my beloved powerbook for about three months without a 7 key thinking I had broken the scissor bit, and dreading the cost of new parts. Didn't bother looking for advice cos I thought it was just busted. But now it's all lovely again. My life is once more complete. Thanks muchly.
