help with German iTunes, a shuffle and a - gasp! - PC

Sho - employed again!

Thanks to Turvy I found out about this place. I've had a thread on Ask for a while about an infernal iPod shuffle smiley - grr

Now I'm about ok to get music onto it, but I don't necessarily want to create an iTunes folder in the Music folder on my PC - it seems unnecessary. Anyhooo. Turvy suggested I look under the preferences and change the setting - but I have no idea where that would be.

I'm using the German version of iTunes but I'm not sure what Preferences would be. Eigenschaften? (that's usually properties)

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on a Mac, where the "Preferences" item is in the "iTunes" menu, but I know that's different on a PC. I think it should be under the "Edit" menu (the one where you find copy/paste etc. - I suppose that I could change my Mac's default language to German to see what the correct translations are, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to get it back. I could probably scrape by that way, but the rest of the people in my house don't know any German).

Once you find the "Preferences" you want to click "Advanced" (it's the icon that looks like a gear, on the Mac it's the 6th icon from the left). Then turn off the items that say the German equivalent of "Keep the iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy music to the iTunes music folder when adding to the library"

Keep in mind that iTunes needs to know where your music is, so if you turn those options off then decide to reorganize your music manually, iTunes will get confused (just add everything back to the library after you reorganize). I prefer to leave those options on, iTunes has a very logical way of organizing things. If I want quick access directly to the files, I just right-click them in iTunes and click "reveal in Explorer" (except on a Mac it's "reveal in Finder").

"Advanced" may translate as "Erweitert", and "Preferences..." maybe as "Einstellungen..."? I'm browsing through the German translation file in iTunes, and those seem the most likely.

My German is rubbish (non-existant really) but this looks promising.
