Is there any way I can see what programmes are sending information to and from my mac?
I've been watching the activity monitor a bit, but it's a bit of a blunt instrument eg I can't really tell what application or part of the OS is sending info.

What you need is a firewall with an activity log. Sorry, I don't have any recommendations at the moment - I'm using a Linux box these days - but I'm sure somebody around here will be able to suggest one.
