Why does my iMac keep crashing?

It's just goes off as though I'd held the power button down for emergency switch off.
On FRiday it wouldn't power back on at all. I get back home this evening and it came on, it's crashed about five time in the last hour.
Could it be hardware or software or have I been infected?

Could be an over heating/thermal expansion issue. That would explain why it wouldn't come straight back on friday but would after it had been given a chance to cool down. My last but one PC was doing that, it got to the point where if it had been off for more that an hour it would come on for about 7mins before switching it's self off, and that was the longest it would run for!

How old's the iMac? If it is that that's wong with it and it's a relatively recent iMac then you may be able to get it repaired, however if it's a bublegum iMac then I doubt if it's worth it. If it's less than 3, possably less than 5, years old then under UK law you could probably claim under consumer law as it hasn't lasted as long as could be reasonably expected, bearing in mind that it's a Mac and I've got a 9yr old PB that still works, but you'd have to check.
Also this might not be what's wrong. If you live near an Apple Store then I'd recomend taking it into there and having a word with one of their techs...that way you can also have a play on the new kit they have lying around, like the new Mac Pro or the 24" iMac

2GHz 20" iMac refurb, I bought it just over a year ago.
I'm complete technophobe. But I was hoping there was something I could do that didn't mean dragging this thing down to Brighton and losing it for a week or two.
I wanted to open the beast up to see if there was dust in there but my screw driver I got out of a cracker wasn't to the task...

I dowloaded a thing to keep an eye on the temperature. But am unclear what the normal range for CPU and hard drive are. Getting rid of a BOINC climate prediction programme seems to have helped a bit with the crashing/going to sleep.
