I know I have a CD burner thing on this contraption. I just don't know how to use it. Same goes for this flatbed scanner.
I also need to do some shopping.
But that's about it.

Well the first two are allegedly intuitive plug-and-play devices. So you already know your in for trouble there. I expect you have some experience with shopping though.

Oops, that's what comes of rewriting sentences from the rear - "your" = "you're".

I just don't think I am adjusting very well at all to being back on the net. I have one week (for hidden secret reasons) to use this computer, and I have to get a whole bunch of things done. I want to get all my files burned onto a CD, but I can't work out how to do it (I think I need some software for that), I want to use this cheap flatbed scanner I have, but I can't work that out either. I have too much to do, enough time, but not enough headspace to do it all in.
Hey-elp!

OK. Did your computer / CD-writer not come with some documentation and CDs? One of the CDs could well contain the drivers for the CD. Ditto for the scanner. If you can tell what make and model they are, you should also be able to get drivers and instructions on the internet, eg the manufacturer's own site.
The other thing to try (although it is better to check documentation first!) is simply to plug them in and turn them on in whatever manner seems appropriate, insert a blank CD or press the scan/go button respectively and see if any software miraculously runs as a result.

It's an assembled-by-friends computer. I don't think I have software for the CD writer. Know any good downloads?

Update :
I have good software for my scanner. But it's claiming I've plugged it in wrong somewhere. But I'll keep kicking it and hope it works.
I think I need to download stuff to burn CD's. Therefore I need recommendations.
I am slowly getting my mind untangled.
I think.

With my scanner it mattered which order you did things. I forget precisely (and it wouldn't necessarily be the same for yours) but some software may have had to be installed before power-up and button pushing and other stuff done after initial button pushing and self-setup.
The CD drive on this machine is claiming to be a PleXWriter. That could mean that somewhere in my collection of setup disks I have one labelled the same and with the right drivers on it. It is a bit cold to go delving into the relevant cupboard though. The software I use above that is CeQuadrat WinOnCD. It is a bit counter-intuitive but seems to work once you've gone round the menus/options/screens a few times trying to find anything which looks like it might do something or tell you something helpful and comprehensible. That's about as much of a recommendation as I can give it. Anything else might be worse though! I can't remember the packages I'd previously used on computers for clients.
Additional advice: make sure you have a lot of blank CDs ready for making mistakes; don't try to use the fastest writing speed as you'll probably end up with an unusable CD unless you are lucky.

Hmm. I think I have just discovered I don't have drivers for the CD writer.
I will have to talk to my buddy.
Why must this happen all at once.
Muchos Thankos for the advice. My brain is a bit frazzled to take it all in. I'll just store it all for later use (and yes, I have enough CD's for what I need plus mistakes )

Sat,
I have some CD writer software kicking around from various previous writers. I *might* have something that would work for you.
Is your CD writer connected and recognised by your PC to the extent that it's working as a reader?
What Operating System are you running (I *seem* to remember something about Windows 2000, but I'm not sure).
Do you know the make/model of the CD writer?
P.

It's working, I know that much. It's a MITSUKI. I think. And I am on 2000, yes.
On advice from the friend that's helping me out computerwise, I downloaded Alcohol: but I haven't got around to using it yet. Seems a bit daunting, so I've been doing the other things I needed to do. If I've not done the file transfers that I need to do by Monday, he's going to bring his around, and it will get sorted then.
No need for major online collaberations I'm sure it will be OK.
