Oops.. too late! 
I just wish that when I do gather the wherewithall to visit AU, I wouldn't have to get to Perth via Sydney. (Or do I?)

It's never vital to go to Sydney, but if you're coming from America, either Sydney or Melbourne is en-croute. Almost anywhere else, and you'll fly via Singapore, which is closer to Perth than Sydney anyway.

From Perth to Kuala Lumpur to LAX (Los Angeles International), so I imagine the reverse holds true.
However, I always thought it would be nice to cruise from the Keys to Perth.
