Conceited Little Megapuppy - Inbound traveller and Unas Matriarch

Just thought I'd pop into your space to say hi. I've been here for a week or so, and I have been enjoying myself a lot.smiley - biggrin

Everyone's really nice here, and I'm sure more people will be dropping by soon to offer their greetings too. You will certainly be hearing from one of the ACEs in no time at all, and they are the best people around to offer help if you get a bit lost.

I hope you have as much of a good time here as I have so far.

See you around

This is too much fun. Did you know how porters got to be called porters?

I am glad to hear that you are enjoying being a researcher. I am having a blast so far. Feel free to drop a line anytime smiley - smiley

Mmm - Beer. An excellent place to start.smiley - ale

'Porter' - from old French 'Portour' from late Latin 'Portator' from earlier Latin 'Portare' = 'to carry' (a big thank you there for Collins' Reference Dictionary).

Well you did ask...smiley - smiley

Ooh look - I've just done some research! I knew I would do it eventually!

tee hee! smiley - smiley Very good researching there fellow researcher! I would also steer you to look at the article on the beer gardens which informed me... that Porters (dark beers) got to be named porters because it was the working class porters that favored the beer. Interesting... huh?

Certainly - I went and had a look at the entry myself. Knowledge should be shared.

I'd never heard the term 'Porter' before. Perhaps because I'm not a Londoner. Dark beer in Cardiff (and probably most of South East Wales) is simply referred to as 'Dark' as that's what the Brewers call it. If you have a Cardiff or South Wales Valleys accent it's generally called 'Daaark'.

I don't recall hearing it in Yorkshire either. But that's probably because most of the students drank lager!
