A Conversation for Doctor Who: The Time Lords

The Loom Controversy...

Terran

If I may start by saying I think thats a great article, and well thought out.

Interesting you mention the Loom though... I'd be interested to know if it was mentioned anywhere other than Lungbarrow.

You see as I see it there is a problem with the Loom, in that much of the old series contradicts it. Ignoring Susan for the moment, both the Doctor and Romana mention young timelord's, in fact I would go as far to say that they are specifically referring to young children. The Master was seen as a child in the Sound of Drums. The Doctor regularly talked about his childhood, and his family (not just cousins), and that he was "a Dad once" in a rather reflective mood. And of course he talks about his own Dad.

Now I'm sure there are plently of ways that these things can be argued away. And I am most certain I don't present as strong an argument as some (not that I intend an argument), but it seems at least to me, that the Loom occupies at the best a redundant time line (maybe something happened in the Time War - thats a good idea for a story actually...).

I don't know, in all honesty it just seems very cold. And makes the Time Lord back story far too obscure. Though I guess at the heart what I'm saying won't really matter because ultimately Lungbarrow states the Doctor was born of a person anyway (although that body then went through the meat grinder so to speak), so the Doctor isn't really 'one of them', in that sense.

That one heart thing (while I'm here) as well seems interesting... the only reference I can think of is from the William Hartnell Doctor. Now if I'm not mistaken the more recent Doctor has on occasion had only one heart working when he's been particularly weak. Now the thought occurs, given the extreme age (for one regeneration anyway) of the first Doctor, that his body probably hadn't been working particularly well for a while, and that only one heart was working. Thats the way I see it anyway. But then I've nothing to back that up either.

Anyway, just my two penneth worth. All this over TV program eh? smiley - winkeye
