there are actually a lot of folks who think that kokua means trash, since the public trash cans in honolulu say "please kokua" on the flap ... is this a guide entry? or should a just write up an explaination of the words that i use with my hawaiian family / friends in regular conversation and email that i guess other folks don't grok. we just talk that way

and this babelfish thing ... i show it to all my clients and friends ... then i have to explain where the name comes from ...

I think an article on common Hawaiian (sp?) phrases would be rather useful.. Do a search first, to see if there is an extant article..

And the kokua thing could be an article all by itself, altho it would be rather short.

I, for one, would be very interested in learning some Hawaiian

how do i let you see a journal entry? ... oh wait ... this is unix, but how dow i format it?

a few hawaiian words in common usage
(no particular order, since this site seems to lack vi and awk)
alii: royalty - okay i moved this one to the top
kapu: keep out, in certain cercumstances, you may want to consider referring to the definition of alii
pau: finished .. (even my mainland friends use this one)
hana: work
pau hana: finished working, maybe retired, or maybe taking a dirt nap
kaukau: food - think kaukau at the luau
kokua: cooperate ... NOT trash
mauka: towards the mountains (not them thar hills)
makai: opposite of mauka ... towards the ocean
ewa: west (only works in homolulu ... a referance to ewa beach, on the west side of pearl harbor)
kokohead: east (only works in honolulu)
haole: literally ghost, white folks
papolo: nicer than n****r, but literally, black
pakalolo: crazy weed ... ask for it in waikiki
keanu: cool (not in common usage, but i had to throw it in, since i lived on keanu street) aloha to mr reeves

Formatting. Brief answer: Use tables, as in HTML.

BUT!! GuideML is not quite the same as HTML, and is far less forgiving of even the slightest syntax error.

To use GuideML, ( only in entries, not in postings or journals...), you must first click the 'add guide entry' button, and then select the GuideML style instead of the plain text style.

One neat trick to help you learn GuideML is to view the code for others pages.

All you need do is replace the 'U' in the address with the word 'testuserpage', for personal pages, and the word 'test' for the 'A' in other guide articles

For example, to view the code for my page, which is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/U167550 replace the 'U' so it reads, http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/testuserpage167550

Use the Preview function, when creating GuideML type entries, and you can also preview much of the effect offline using your browser as a previewer. It won't display everything accurately, such as footnotes and some of the formatting, but it will give you a general idea..

Also, visit the GuideML Clinic, ( I can't recall the URL at the mo, but you can find the link at my links page, or at the POST's links page..)

so, 'wiki wiki', and start creating!!! And stay away from the pakalolo

hmm...

just discoverred that my space looks fine under netscape 4.77 - static for mosaic ... but in opera v5.0, the page renders the journal enrtry on the right, as a tight collumn. oops guess i need to write the opera doods?

normally, opera works fine here, except for java and audio links ... and i like opera better, for the speed.

well, it is definitely an opera problem ... another browser ... slipstone loads the page just fine also. I did notice that the n-word got d*****d ... hmm in hawaii that particular word is considered appropriate when used in the same sentence as papolo.

interesting software tho (please tell that was not a human who updated my writing)

Actually, some words considered offensive, would be moderated, by a real, live human... You're lucky.. sometimes entire spaces are hidden until the owner corrects the fault.. but that usually only happens to the actual intro, not to journal entries.

Oh, and although your hawaiian word thing is a nice journal entry, consider turning into an article, with or without GuideML.. IMHO, it would lend itself well to being formatted in a table.

Umm. You can't... The journal is like a... well, journal. You can remove entries, and create new ones, but once you have posted and entry to your journal it cannot be altered, just removed. Even then it is not permanently removed, only hidden..

For creating articles that you can alter, you must use the 'Add Guide Entry' button...

Later, you can edit the entry much the same way as you can edit your personal space..

I usually create my entries offline, using a simple text editor, MetaPad -- freeware

If the thing is in GuideML, I can preview ~most~ of the 'look' by opening the finished text file using my browser

Word processors are a bit of a pain to use, because they often have special codes for apostrophes and other punctuation, which the h2g2 system does not 'grok'... You will no doubt see the amusing results of this occasionally as you view various threads..

Anyway, try GuideML.. Its really very much like HTML, and uses many of the same tags. And its fun

i took that approach to change the n-word reference in my entry, and fix a few typos ...

also added an entry for waikiki, so the pakalolo refernce made more sence.

select ... copy ... paste into my favorite word processor (vi) ... delete h2g2 entry ... edit text ...

paste back into h2g2 ...

works good, but i guess if there were a lot of old(er) entries the order of the journal could become an issue.

aside from that, are there other (online) tools for turning a journal entry into a posting ... or do we just
copy / edit / paste?

are there any vi templates (.vimrc files) for guidedML?

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about... I am stuck with a windoze box, not having the time or patience to much about with Linux... much as I would like to..

There are no 'online tools' as far as I know.. but why would you want to convert a journal entry into a posting, anyway? Or do you mean article?

I use the copy/paste method, for darn near everything I do, on site or off.

Not sure what you mean by the order of journal entries... they are automatically ordered by time... Articles are entities of themselves, and aren't really ordered, at least for user purposes..

Check out the list of Guide entries on my page, and you'll see what I mean.. I think..

There are currently no GML editors around, although I recall hearing someone was working on a java-powered one, to be offered free to h2g2.. I don't know what the status of that one is..

There is a very good application available for win platforms, called Ultra Edit. It is shareware, and may be ported to other OSs.

WSYWIG HTML editors such as Dreamweaver, can be forced to write GML, and maybe even tweaked to do it well.. I know it works real well in constructing tables, which can be copied and pasted into a text editor for additional tweaking..

If you have questions specific to a non-windowze OS, perhaps you should drop by the GURUs page...

And remember the trick to view the code for GuideML entries... replace the 'U' with 'testuserpage' and the 'A' with 'test'
